Student of the Month

Read Judy's answers to our interview questions:

  Q: Tell us about you.
A: 58, married to David Murray,I am a litigation attorney at Hiscock & Barclay here in Syracuse currently specializing in the defense of Native American land claims asserted against municipalities, previously a social worker at the YWCA, member of Board of Directors of Salvation Army, Syracuse Symphony, Onondaga County Bar Association and Downtown Committee; own and show Morgan horses, also love to play tennis, garden and read novels by first time authors.

Q: How long have you played golf?
A: Since I was a teenager, but not seriously until the 70s when I started taking lessons, first from Auggie Nordone at LaFayette, then Earl Mower at Onondaga, (with tune ups from Jack Conger and Joe Tesori) then no lessons for about 18 years until Linda.

Q: What made you begin to play golf and why do you continue to play?
A: Began playing golf in the small town where I lived because my parents belonged to the local Oneida Community golf course; continued playing over the years because I love the game and being outdoors.

Q: Why do you take lessons?
A: I take lessons because I want to be as good as I am capable of being; I started taking from Linda after many years of no lessons and after the last few years of decreased playing because I knew I was in need of some tuning up (I imagined minor tune up, but Linda saw need for major rehaul.)

Q: What do you enjoy most about golf?
A: Walking a golf course and attempting to manage the course.

Q: What is the best part of your game?
  A: irons

Q: What is the worst part of your game?
A: chipping

Q: Who do you enjoy playing golf with?
A: Judy McLean from Onondaga and my husband David

Q: What are you trying to improve with your lessons?
  A: Tee ball; chipping

Q: What's in your golf bag?
A: Before Linda made me buy a driver, I carried 3 and 5 woods, 4,5,6,7,8,9, PW, UW, SW and putter.

Q: What was your most memorable golf round?
  A: 73 at Pompey Hills

Q: What is your favorite golf course?
A: Onondaga

Q: Who is your favorite golfer?
A:  I do not have a single favorite: I like Tiger's discipline, dedication to the game and athletic abilities; I like Freddie Couples' swing and demeanor; I like Joe Tesori's love of the game, integrity and humility

Q: What interests do you have besides golf?
A: my horses, tennis, gardening, reading, volunteer work

Q:  How long have you worked with Linda?
  A: Since 3/28/03

Q: What was your favorite golf lesson?
A: The first lesson out on the course: it was wildly windy and just plain fun.

Q: Why do you take lessons from Linda?
A: Linda's lessons are terrific because of the positive focus she brings and gives; when she began the restructuring of my swing it was because there were mostly negatives in the swing, but she never approached any single aspect with a negative, rather, it was always, "I would like you to try ..." or "Let's try..."; she never clued me in on just how bad I was because I would have been too discouraged to continue; instead, it was one single piece at a time so I always felt as if I was accomplishing something; she appreciates that not every golfer has great feel or can attack several problems at once; also the videos are a fabulous learning tool for people like me who learn easier and quicker visually than orally.
