January 2005 Student of the Month

Read Mary's answers to our interview questions:

  Q: Tell us about you.
A: I am a 17 year old senior at Cortland High School. Next year I will be attending Longwood University to play division 1 golf. My older brother (19) attends St. John's University.

(And Mary's Mom adds:  Mary is an honor student and ranks in the Top Ten of her class. She has been on the basketball and field hockey teams for four years. She was chosen MVP and First-Team All League for Field Hockey.)

Q: How long have you played golf?
  A: Since I was 8 years old.

Q: What made you begin to play golf and why do you continue to play?
A: My dad plays so sometimes he would take me with him to the golf course, the main attraction being riding in the golf cart. I eventually got my own junior set of clubs and started to take lessons. I discovered that I really enjoyed playing.

Q: Why do you take lessons?
A: To continue to improve and be the best I can be.

Q: What do you enjoy most about golf?
A: The most enjoyable part is all the experiences that have come along with playing. Meeting people and playing at different courses.

Q: What is the best part of your game?
A: Solid iron play. My ability to stay focused and disciplined has certainly improved.

Q: What is the worst part of your game?
A: Consistency. It all depends what day it is! My short game is what holds me back the most.

Q: Who do you enjoy playing golf with?
A: I love playing with my family- my mom and dad. I like tournament play, meeting and playing with different competitors.

Q: What are you trying to improve with your lessons?
A: All parts of my game have areas that can be improved. Currently I am working on tightening my swing.

Q: What's in your golf bag?
A: TaylorMade 540 driver, Callaway Steelhead Plus 3 wood, Steelhead III 5 wood, Ping i3 irons, Titleist Vokey Wedges (52, 56, 60), Ping G2 putter.

Q: What was your most memorable golf round?
A: One of my best/most memorable rounds was two years ago when I shot a 73 during a CNY Jr. tournament at Foxfire. Everything was just on. At that time it was only my second time breaking 80 in a tournament and it was one of my turning points in my game.

Q: What is your favorite golf course?
A: Throughout tournament play, I have had the opportunity to play at many different courses and I have enjoyed them.

Q: Who is your favorite golfer?
A:  I have a lot of favorites. I enjoy watching and reading about them all, both male and female. It is so interesting to watch their golf ability, their undying determination and competitive spirits.

Q: What interests do you have besides golf?
A: I play field hockey and basketball. I enjoy skiing, working out, and spending time with my friends.

Q: How long have you worked with Linda?
  A: Almost a year.

Q: What was your favorite golf lesson?
A: I have fun at all of my lessons. My first lesson is one of my favorites because it was when I met Linda and we began to work together.

Q: Why do you take lessons from Linda?
A: In addition to improving my golf ability, Linda has given me confidence and motivation to strive to be better.
