An Interview with
Kitty Canale

September
Student of the Month

More on why Linda chose Kitty as this month's student.....

She is a dedicated player, finding time to both play and practice, and challenged herself to compete in local amateur events to elevate her game to an even higher level. This competition has made her an even better player as she has had an oportunity to measure herself against some of the top women in the local area.

The playing and competing is only a portion of why she is such a great student. It is her "attitude" that captured my attention for student of the month. She comes to the lesson tee with a smile and is a pleasure to teach. Always open to suggestions to improve her game and an acceptance that it may get a bit worse before it gets better. I know that I can challenge her to be her best without her panicking about an occasional missed shot while practicing the changes. Her fantastic demeanor on the golf course is something that every amateur should strive for, since it is in that attitude that a round can turn around for the better in spite of bad shots.

Business is a big part of why Kitty plays golf and it is evident that she can hold her head high in any business situation with her golf game. I am proud to have her as a student and look forward to watching her grow as one of the top amateurs in the area.

Read Kitty's answers to our interview questions:

Q: Tell us about you.
A: I am 42 years old. I took up the game of golf because of my job. I sell fiber optic and coax cables, the company is based out of North Carolina and one of the jokes in the industry is that they ask for your handicap on the job application. I play in a lot of golf tournaments and also sponsor many outings with customers. I met my fiancee on the golf course, we plan all our vacations around golf.
Q: How long have you played golf?
A: I have been playing for about 12 years.

Q: How did you start and why do you play golf?
A: Being in a male dominated industry, golf is a way for me to get to know my customers better and also get their undivided attention for 4 hours.

I would love to compete in district, however, with my job I am not always in town. And at this point, the Syracuse Womens District does not recognize Radisson Greens. I love playing a good match against better golfers for a few coins. I play in a lot of 2-ball invitationals, and also try to play in the Post Standard tournament every year.

Q: Why do you take lessons?
A: I take lessons to gain confidence in my game.

Q: What do you enjoy most about golf?
A: The most enjoyable part of the game for me is beating my last score and knowing that you are in the zone. I started out with a USGA handicap of 17 in the spring and have been able to bring that down to 11.2.
Q: What is the best part of your game?
A: Irons, irons, irons. Thank you Linda.
Q: What is the worst part of your game?
A: I have struggled with my driver and fairway woods over the last year.

Q: Who do you enjoy playing golf with?
A: My favorite person to play with is my fiancee, Mike. He keeps me grounded and my head in the game.
Q: What's in your golf bag?
A: I have a Nike driver, Callaway 3 wood, Ping I3, (3-Gap) irons, Cleveland lob & sand wedge, and Ping Isopur putter.

Q: What was your most memorable golf round?
A: My most exciting round was at Radisson Greens, where I finally broke 80 and shot a 79. My most memorable hole was playing 18 at Pebble Beach, I had an okay drive and then left my second shot with a little over 230 yards into the green. Our caddie told me to go into the front bunker, he said I had been playing well from the sand all day. I hit my 3 iron into the bunker and was able to get up and down for my sandy par. There was a group of guys watching from the terrace of the lodge and they all cheered me on...

Q: What is your favorite golf course?
A: Conklin Players Club in Conklin, NY. However, standing on 18 at Pebble Beach is breathtaking.
Q: Who is your favorite golfer?
A:  Annika Sorenstam and anyone who beats Tiger Woods. Let me rephrase that, anyone who is not intimidated by Tiger Woods.

Q:  How long have you worked with Linda?
A: I have been working with Linda for 2 years.

Q: What was your favorite golf lesson?
A: I look forward to every lesson with Linda. I love the playing lessons early in the morning where we can work on my entire game.

Q: What interests do you have besides golf?
A: We love to go boating, in fact the name of our boat is "After Fore Play", we take the first tee time in the morning and are on the boat by noon. I also kickbox and rollerblade.
